Agilent Technologies’ Instrumentation Powers World-Class EE Teaching Lab
Achieving educational excellence revered by Universities around the world has long been a goal for the National Cheng Kung University (NCKU). Now, with NCKU’s Electrical Engineering Department and Agilent Technologies’ products and support, the University may be closer than ever to realizing this lofty goal.
In 2011, the Engineering Department undertook the task of building a world-class teaching lab designed to familiarize college-level students with electrical engineering theory, from basic BJT and MOSFET testing to advanced filter, A-to-D and D-to-A testing. Their intent was to provide students with a complete learning experience that incorporated access to the best faculty and newly developed curriculum, educational materials and equipment, as well as purchased test equipment.
The faculty members began by benchmarking NCKU against a number of leading universities. To determine which equipment to purchase, they conducted an extensive 6-month evaluation of various vendors’ instrumentation. The goal was to identify solutions with enough accuracy and functionality to support modern devices.
This past October, following conclusion of the evaluation, Agilent Technologies was chosen to provide the lab’s test equipment. The primary factors in this decision were Agilent’s superior product performance, accuracy and functionality. Agilent’s exceptional customer support also helped differentiate it from competing test and measurement vendors.
To date, NCKU has purchased and taken delivery of 35 100-MHz digital storage oscilloscopes, 35 function generators, 18 power supplies, and 18 digital multimeters. In addition to providing instrumentation and educational support to ensure its proper use, Agilent will also work with the lab to develop test curriculum and build up specialized experiments to showcase its test functionality. NCKU’s new electrical engineering teaching lab is expected to open in early 2012.
