Adjusting the Defect Analyzer detection parameters on the Medalist 5DX Automated X-ray System

Defect Analyzer operates by making a small change in the ‘z’ height of the board and re-testing suspect joints.

There is a configuration file C:\5dx\rxx\config\defectanalyzer.cfg which sets the increment in ‘z’ to be used.

The default defectanalyzer.cfg file has:

Normally only the first +/- 3 mils slice is used to compensate for board warp and obtain a good joint image. The total travel is limited to +/- 12mils which enables compensation for more severe board warpage.

Note: Defect analyzer has been disabled on joint failure types where changing the z-height away from the nominal might cause a real defect to pass.

Only the ‘z’ increment can be modified in C:\5dx\rxx\config\defectanalyzer.cfg.

If (for example) you set zHeightInMilsForRetest=4

Then, for a defective joint, the software will capture images at the following z offsets: 0, +4, -4, +8, -8, +12, -12

If the joint passes at, for example, the +4 slice, then the software will not continue to the other settings. i.e. The z height will be moved up/down until +/- 12 mils unless the joint passes at an earlier stage.
