We will showcase our leading-edge communications test and measurement solutions for LTE, VoLTE and HSPA+ Dual Carrier along with 2G/3G solutions targeting the entire mobile devices R&D life cycle:
• Test HSDPA Dual Carrier with 42 Mbps Throughput and TD-HSPA with the New Agilent E5515E Wireless Communications Test set
• Verify LTE UE performance under controlled test conditions using the Agilent E6621A PXT Wireless Communications Test set, an industry leading UE performance and conformance test for both FDD and TDD: a flexible, scalable LTE base-station emulator used to verify the RF parameters, protocol and device functionality comply with design expectations. With the latest enhancements to PXT you can now verify voice over LTE (VoLTE) and inter radio access technology (iRAT) handover from LTE to 3G, plus circuit switched fall back (CSFB).
1. Further Along the Road to 4G – an Update on LTE-Advanced
Now that LTE Release 8 is widely released across all regions, the industry is turning its attention to the on-going evolution of LTE in Release 9 and LTE-Advanced which is part of Release 10.
This paper provides the latest summary of what’s new in LTE standardization. The focus will be on LTE-Advanced, 3GPP’s submission to the ITU’s IMT-Advanced (4G) program, but will also include summaries of Release 9 and the upcoming Release 11.
2. Introduction to 802.11ac WLAN technology and testing
The growing popularity of high-definition video and desire for fast streaming and file transfers is driving a need for higher data throughput for WLAN.
This paper provides an introduction to the new IEEE 802.11ac standard that is under development to address the need for “very high throughput,” focusing on the physical layer. Some of the design and test challenges that R&D and test engineers may face as they implement the new features in this standard will also be discussed, and measurement solutions will be presented.
3. New challenges for UE developers with voice transport over LTE
With increasing deployment of LTE with ever-increasing demands for high-data throughput, we are witnessing faster transition to an all IP based network. While mobile applications continue to dominate demands on the mobile infrastructure, legacy traffic such as voice and services will provide fresh challenges in extracting deterministic performance from an IP based backbone provided by LTE. The new demands on end-to-end IP data performance will require frequent fallbacks from packet to circuit switched mechanisms, and added complexity in handovers between LTE and 2G/3G/3.5G.
This paper discusses the challenges for mobile device developers in transporting voice on packet based networks, the relevance and evolution of VoLTE technologies and the dependencies on handovers for achieving robust performance. It also provides insights on testing needs and solutions from Agilent.
4. Optimize UE design for greater battery run-time
Today’s multi-tasking cellular user equipment (UE) boast powerful processors, incorporate back-lit touch-screen displays and have amassed multiple radio receivers and transmitters that are sending and receiving data at unprecedented rates. The might and performance of these devices have one common dependency – they rely on limited battery power to keep their users simultaneously informed, entertained, in-touch, and happy.
This paper discusses the challenges of verifying battery consumption during different UE operating modes and the tools available to measure the effects in power consumption resulting from the complex interactions between hardware, firmware, operating system, and applications. It evaluates the benefits of test automation including the development of real-world UE usage scenarios to evaluate battery drain rates and battery run down times. With the right tools, UE designers can test early and thoroughly, adjusting their design implementation for optimal battery performance bringing smaller, longer running, products to market more quickly and with fewer resources.
5. How to verify your LTE Protocol and RF interactions
For system integration engineers and verification engineers, the troubleshooting of new evolved Node B (eNB) and user equipment (UE) designs will only get tougher as wireless standards become more advanced. In standards such as LTE, the biggest challenges stem from the complex interactions between the physical (PHY) and media access control (MAC) layers during signaling operations.
This paper starts with a description of the different protocol layers (and the messages they contain), used to configure the uplink transmissions and manage the link operation. A number of examples are used to show what these signals look like, using data from real equipment. The examples include recovery of vital uplink configuration details during eNB-UE synchronization and HARQ process activity in response to noise in the channel. Many engineers working at the PHY layer rely on two tools: RF signal analyzers such as the Agilent X-Series and vector signal analysis software such as the Agilent 89600 VSA. As a complement to the 89600 VSA, Agilent has created the 89600 wireless link analysis (WLA) software to help PHY-focused engineers understand the MAC-layer control messaging that occurs between devices.
