Overview:
The Split Cylinder Resonator method was recently adopted by IPC as standard test method TM-650 2.5.5.13 for complex permittivity of low loss dielectric materials. The standard defines much of the measurement process, but leaves some critical parameters up to the user. This paper will discuss considerations needed to make the method successful: Frequency and quality factor determination from network analyzer measurements, initial estimate of the real part of permittivity, avoiding interfering modes that may degrade measurement accuracy and sample thickness measurement.
