34980A Firmware

Procedure to install 34980A Firmware Revision 2.43:

  1. Download and install the Agilent 34980A Firmware Update Utility located in the Documents & Downloads section at the bottom of this page. If you already have the Firmware Update Utility installed on your computer, skip this step.
  2. Download the Agilent 34980A Firmware Revision 2.43 file located in the Documents & Downloads section at the bottom of this page.
  3. Unzip the Agilent 34980A Firmware Revision 2.43 file, making note of where you store the unzipped file.
  4. Open the Firmware Update Utility (Start -> Programs -> Agilent -> Firmware Update Utility).
  5. Click Next.
  6. Click Browse and locate the firmware update file (agt34980_instrument_rev243.xs) that you unzipped in step 3. Highlight the file and select Open.
  7. Click Next.
  8. Select the I/O interface (GPIB, LAN, or USB) that connects your 34980A mainframe to your PC.
  9. Choose the settings necessary for communication (GPIB address, IP address, USB ID).
  10. Click Update. NOTE: This update will take several minutes and the 34980A will display status messages and automatically reboot when completed. After the first reboot, some modules in the frame may also be automatically updated, and then the frame will reboot again. DO NOT cycle or interrupt power to the 34980A during the update process.
  11. After this is completed, exit the update utility.

Note: For 34945A, remember to connect the 34945EXT to the 34945A before doing the firmware update.

Refer to the 34980A front panel and note if there are any errors (the ERROR light will be on in the display). Press VIEW twice on the front panel to see the number of messages and use the knob to scroll if there is more than one. If you receive the error "-310,"system error: memory corrupt: license counters were reset', then reboot the mainframe and the condition will be corrected. If there are other new errors that you need assistance with, please write them down and contact Agilent for further assistance.

If you have additional modules that were not installed in the mainframe during the update, continue with the remaining steps as these modules must be updated manually - otherwise the update process is complete!

  1. Turn off the frame and reinstall any additional modules and turn the frame on again. (You may see an error at this point, but ignore for the moment.)
  2. Press the UTILITY menu button on the front panel and use the knob to scroll to select "Firmware" (press again), then select "Update" (press again), and scroll if necessary to see if any slot numbers are showing up and select each one to update if necessary, if not exit the menu. A reboot will occur after each update.
  3. After all module updates are complete, note if there are any errors (the ERROR light will be on in the display). Press VIEW twice on the front panel to see the number of messages and use the knob to scroll if there is more than one. If there are new errors that you need assistance with, please write them down and contact Agilent for further assistance.
  4. The update process is now complete.

Note: There is no need to re-calibrate the 34980A or modules when this new firmware is installed.
