I have a working 8953E w/o a tracking generator and a broken 8954E which has a known to be good tracking generator. Can I move the tracking generator to the 8953E easily? What do I have to do in terms of any coefficients or cal settings that would need to be loaded into the 8953 to make this work correctly?

Is the procedure documented in the sub-assembly service manual? What do I have to do to get the 8953E to recognize the addition of the tracking generator option ?

Thank you in advance

Most of the parts are the same for both instrument when it comes to the tracking generator, since it only goes up to 2.9 GHz. The only differences will probably be some of the cables.

There are some manual adjustments that would normally need to be made on the card cage TG / LODA control board when the option is added to an instrument, but since you would be moving all of the parts that the adjustments are for along with the control board the adjustments should be fine as they are.

You do not need to enable the option, the instrument will recognize the contol board and enable it all. The only adjustments that you should need to do is the front panel TG calibration that is run with a short cable connected between the RF OUT and RF IN connectors on the front panel and executed on the CAL menu.

Have fun,
Mike

Hi Simon,

I can't find a copy of the component layout but I was able to find the schematic for it. I hope this helps...

Best regards,
Mike

hi mike you seem very knowledgeable about these on the 9 series. how about the 60a and e? how do I program the analyzer to remove or add the tracking gen on them? i disconnected the cable but it still shows it. is there a jumper somewhere or does it have to be programmed with soft key function or some special code? also do you know how to realign the yto on 8560a? because the external mixer softkey goes away once the tracking gen is installed. so how would I replace a yto on an 8560a with tracking gen ? thanks!
