Mounting Bar Code Scanners Inside Fixtures

Does anyone have any experience with scanning bar code labels from inside the fixture from the bottom up? Have been tasked with scanning bar code labels placed on the bottom sides of boards and would appreciate hearing everyone's successful and failed experiences.

Our fixture vendor has recommended using Microscan MS-4 for this with a mirrored, 45 degree angled bracket. Does anyone have any coding samples for the MS-4?

Thanks!

The only issue I have seen is controlling how much the barcode is allowed to float. I've never personally developed a fixture that used this, but I've seen them on the floor and they work fine.

John, Can you explain what you mean by 'float'?

BTW: Should be in Austin in a few weeks, looking forward to Fitties BBQ out on 71 near Bastrop.

The tolerance within which the barcode label is placed. Some customers have very stringent parameters where that label must be. Others allow the label to be placed anywhere on a specific area of the board. The barcode scanner generally can't look over a wide area for that label. At least that's been my experience.

Does that make sense? I mean the tolerance of the X-Y location of the label.

Welcome to Austin. A little early I know, but enjoy your stay. :-)

John,

Yes, that makes sense and should pose a problem.

We have experience with laser scanners which have no more tolerance for reading labels than the scan line has for crossing the coded bars. Motorola MS4404 HD CCD scanners are cost effective and do a good job of locating labels floating well outside of designated label spaces. This will be our first microscan experience, just a bit wary. Luckily, Microscan was forthcoming with sample code for communicating with the scanners and the fixture house has experience in best placement of the scanners for a designated label space.

BTW, did you ever attend an advanced digital class in Loveland?

I have never been to Colorado. I took the introductory class in Santa Clara and Agilent came onsite for boundary scan. So, no to both. :-(

Hi D Bailey, i have seen a couple of applications -

one that worked relatively well was to mount the barcode reader (like microscan) in the top of the fixture and mill out an area in the base of the fixture at an agle and insert a small mirror in there to bounce off - this works OK and i am assuming that the barcode is on the outer edge of the base ?

this was a 1D standard barcode, not 2D and was used on single or 2 up panels - it worked pretty well and this was relatively large volumes, so reliability was OK

thanks, Jon

We are forced to use rather large labels, 3/8" x 2.5". Our fixture house milled out a pocket inside the P-Pin area and we installed a glass window with a gasket and frame in the probe plate. We ended up using a Microscan MS-4 with their 45 degree mirror mount option (90 degree scan angle). The bar code label is at the very edge of the board, but we were still not able to see the complete label due to nearby probes. By angling the whole mount an additional 30 degrees, we were able to pick up the complete label. The whole thing was finished just yesterday.

Thanks for the response.

Hi Dbailey - glad you got it working Ok, the mirrors technique is usually the way to go, preferably without the smoke -

I am an expert on barcode. I happen to come across this thread and would like to share some resource with you. Here is a very good and professional barcode site. You can find various barcode readers and barcode generators there. Useful barcode creation passages can also be found there. Some of the tools are free to use.

Ironic Fate: This project turned out to be conceptual. The fixture and test were developed just in time for the product to be permanently shelved. At least test engineering got paid.

Adrian,

Unfortunately, to many people abuse the internet and so IT here bans all access to dancing cats on youtube and social media on Facebook.
